Today I am continuing to make my way east across the Isle of Mull – a wild and beautiful Hebridean island linking Iona to the Scottish mainland. It was in the year 635 that Aidan – whose name means ‘little fiery one’ – was sent out from Iona to establish a mission to the pagan Kingdom of Northumbria (in north-east England today). We cannot be sure of his exact route, but it can’t have been far different from ours…
