Life in a Monastery in the 21st Century?
We—seven households from Steffisburg—have decided to embark on this experiment together. It all began with questions about life that were on our minds. We have discovered the centuries-old tradition of monasteries, which combines spirituality, work, and communal life and brings them into harmony.
Motto: A problem shared is a problem halved, and joy shared is joy doubled.
We share rooms, outdoor spaces, cars, and resources of all kinds—and we’re discovering an astonishingly great deal of potential in doing so! Interestingly, this also works on a personal level. True to the saying: A problem shared is a problem halved, and joy shared is joy doubled.
In 2012, we founded our “modern monastery” in the heart of Steffisburg. Since then, we have been living in ten apartments spread across several houses, all of which are just a stone’s throw away from one another.
The name “Kloster Alte Gärtnerei” wasn’t chosen at random. The place where we live was once the site of a large nursery and, fittingly, once belonged to the Interlaken Monastery.
