With Phil and Ruby
Welcome to Lectio for Families. This week we are continuing our series exploring the life and teachings of Jesus in Mark’s Gospel.

Each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Jesus, we hear You inviting us, and so we choose to follow You, with all our hearts, with all our minds, with all our souls and with all our strength.

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

After Jesus was arrested, He was questioned by the religious leaders. Today we’re REFLECTING on the questions they asked about who Jesus really was.

Read by Ruby
Mark 14:61-62
The high priest asked Jesus another question: ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?’ Jesus answered, ‘I am. And in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of God, the Powerful One, and coming on clouds in the sky.’
Mark 14:61b-62 (NCV)

Jesus knew who he was – He was the Son of God. The religious leaders didn’t believe Him, but they’d also heard about some of the things that Jesus had done, so they were confused. Mostly, though, they were angry with Him – angry because Jesus had so much influence – so many others had believed Him and wanted to follow Him, and they didn’t like what was happening.

In today’s passage, Jesus describes Himself as the Son of God. Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: What three words would we use to describe ourselves? (They can be sensible or funny!)

Ask

ASK Prayers

In one of his letters, John writes, ‘The Father has loved us so much that we are called children of God.’ (1 John 3:1a NCV) Here are three words that describe who we are! We are all ‘children of God’.

Loving Father, we ASK You to help us really take this in… that we are children of God. Thank You for inviting us into Your special family.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Let’s think of a friend at school or at work, or someone else that we know, who might struggle to believe that God would want them as one of His children.

Father God, we ASK You to give us courage to talk with them about how much you love them. We pray that they will discover Your love and that they will come to accept that they are Your children too.

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together.

Jesus, we say YES, we believe that You are God’s own Son, and that because of Your life, death and resurrection, we can be friends with God… even more than that, we can be God’s children.

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
