With Phil and Kate
Welcome to Lectio for Families. It’s the start of a new series based on the book of Psalms. Each week, we’re going to focus on one of the six practices at the heart of Lectio for Families and 24-7 Prayer, which are: prayer and creativity, justice and hospitality, learning and mission. This week, we’re focusing on the practice of creativity.

As usual, each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Creator God, who formed us from dust, breathe in us again. We’re ready for the new things that You want to show us and say to us and even create through us today.

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

Today, we’re REFLECTING on a few of the many aspects of God’s creativity.

Read by Kate
Psalm 104:5-7
You placed the world on its foundation
so it would never be moved.
You clothed the earth with floods of water,
water that covered even the mountains.
At your command, the water fled;
at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.
Psalm 104:5-7 (NLT)

The whole of Psalm 104 is a celebration of creation, and in the verses that we’ve just read, there are at least three examples of how God expresses His creativity.

First, the writer says that God ‘placed the world on its foundation’. God makes things and builds things. Next, it says that God ‘clothed the earth’. God not only makes things, but He designs them and makes them beautiful. And finally, the writer says that ‘at [God’s] command, the waters fled’. God uses words to create and change things too. Whether we’re constructing Minecraft landscapes or building skyscrapers, designing outfits or drawing cartoons, writing stories or speaking in front of classes, we all get our creative gifts from God, the one who created everything.

Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: Which creative gift or skill would we most like to have?

Ask

ASK Prayers

Father God, as we read, think and pray about creativity this week, we ASK You to fill us with Your creative Holy Spirit. Make us more creative in everything that we think and say and do.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Water is mentioned a couple of times in today’s verses. And later in Psalm 104, the writer says that God ‘provides water for all the animals.’ Let’s pray specifically for places around the world where people and animals don’t have the water they need.

Creator God, we ASK You to send the rain where it’s needed most. Where people and animals are suffering from drought, we ASK You to provide fresh water, and where people don’t have access to clean water, we ASK you to provide creative solutions to this problem.

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

Psalm 104:5-7
You placed the world on its foundation
so it would never be moved.
You clothed the earth with floods of water,
water that covered even the mountains.
At your command, the water fled;
at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.
Psalm 104:5-7 (NLT)

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together.

Creator God, the Universe and everything in it belongs to You because You made it – You designed it and built it and made it beautiful. We say YES, we love the beautiful things you have made!

Pause

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
