With Chris and Ruby
Welcome to Lectio for Families. We’re continuing our series based on the book of Psalms and the six practices which are at the heart of Lectio for Families and 24-7 Prayer. This week, we’re focusing on the practice of justice.

Each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Mighty God, open our eyes, stir our hearts and teach us how, ‘To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly’ with You today. (Micah 6:8)

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

Today, we’re REFLECTING on Psalm 11, a poem written by King David about how God watches over the earth.

Read by Ruby
Psalm 11:4-5,7
The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord sits on his throne in heaven.
He sees what people do;
he keeps his eye on them.
The Lord tests those who do right,
but he hates the wicked and those who love to hurt others.
The Lord does what is right, and he loves justice,
so honest people will see his face.
Psalm 11:4-5,7 (NCV)

When David wrote this poem, he was responding to some friends who were warning him to run away and hide because things weren’t going well for him – in fact, David’s life was in danger. These friends weren’t sure if it was wise for David to trust God.

But David was convinced. He was confident that he was under God’s watchful care, and that God always did what was right and just.

David says that people who act justly and are honest will see God’s face! Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: When we think about God, what do we imagine God’s face looks like?

Ask

ASK Prayers

Let’s close our eyes for a moment and imagine God’s face… and God’s big smile too.

Thank you, Father God, that when You look at us, You see us as Your children. Thank you that You see us and You watch over us.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

David says that God loves justice – God loves it when things are right and fair. But God doesn’t love it when people are unfair and unkind towards each other.

Father God, we pray for those who feel hurt because they have been treated badly by others. We ASK You to watch over them and protect them.

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

Psalm 11:4-5,7
The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord sits on his throne in heaven.
He sees what people do;
he keeps his eye on them.
The Lord tests those who do right,
but he hates the wicked and those who love to hurt others.
The Lord does what is right, and he loves justice,
so honest people will see his face.
Psalm 11:4-5,7 (NCV)

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and tell each other

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together.

God of Justice and Mercy, we say YES to becoming more like You. Help us to do what is right, to love justice and to be honest with everyone.

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
