Chris Selah
With Chris and Selah
Welcome to Lectio for Families. Today, we are beginning a new series on the theme of ‘Identity’, reflecting on what the Bible says about who God is, and who we are too. This week, we are focusing on the different names that the Bible uses for God to see what they can teach us about Him.

Each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Awesome God, thank you for the many ways you make yourself known. Our minds are open to learning more about You, and our hearts are open to knowing You better. We’re ready for You to speak to us.

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

Today we’re REFLECTING on an encounter that Abram had with God.

Read by Selah
Genesis 17:1-2
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty. Obey me and do what is right. I will make an agreement between us, and I will make you the ancestor of many people.’
Genesis 17:1-2 (NCV)

In the Bible, names are really important. People use lots of different names for God, and sometimes God even uses different names for Himself. These names can help us to understand more about who God is. In this story, God gives Abram the really big promise that he would have many children, who would have even more children, who would have even more children… which is exciting, but strange, because Abram didn’t have any kids at that time – in fact, he was already 99 years old. That’s leaving things a bit late!

But God said, I am ‘El Shaddai’, God Almighty. By using this name, God was telling Abram, ‘I can do anything!’

God Almighty sounds a bit like a superhero name. Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: If we had a superhero name, what would it be?

Ask

ASK Prayers

And now, let’s pray a big prayer.

El Shaddai, Almighty God, You are All Powerful – You can do things that seem impossible to us. We ASK You to show us a little bit of Your power this week.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Some people feel like no one knows their names, like no one even knows who they are. Perhaps they feel alone, or they really are alone because they have no family or friends.

You know all of us, Father God. You know every single person’s name. We ASK You to be especially close to those who are lonely today – bring people into their lives who can know them by their names and show them love.

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together using these words from Philippians.

Almighty God, we say YES to remembering that we can do all things through Christ, because He gives us strength. (Philippians 4:13, NCV)

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
