DECLARING A YEAR OF PRAYER!
June 2006 – June 2007

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

From Friday, June 9, 2006 until Friday, June 8, 2007, the Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory will pray 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for a whole year! The Eastern Territory composes U.S. states from Maine south to Delaware and west to Kentucky.

The idea for the year of prayer is to recruit at least 52 Salvation Army Corps/centers to do one week of 24-7 prayer, thereby covering a year of prayer across the territory.

Linking it back to Salvation Army Heritage
There are many powerful books telling how the first Salvationists engaged in battle.  You will read about their all night prayer meetings and the amazing things that happened during these times.  We're seeking to recover some of this heritage in our day!

The Salvation Army and 24-7 Prayer
The UK Salvation Army Mission Team launched a year of prayer in the UK Territory at the 2001 Roots conference in May 2001. At the Roots conference, where attendance exceeded 3,600 people, over 1,500 people passed through the 24-7/SA prayer room during the 4 day conference. And at one point, at 12.30am, there were over 150 Salvationists, of all ages, in the prayer room, praying.

During the first year (4 May 2001 until 3 May 2002) of constant, 24-7 prayer in the UK Territory, over 200 Corps and Centers from the UK Salvation Army were involved in the 24-7/SA prayer project. However, this also included Corps in all parts of the world, including Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Russia, USA and Canada.

Also, in Vancouver, Canada, young Salvationists are keeping the fire of prayer burning -- in what they call The War Room. What started as a one-week commitment has continued on for nearly 2 years . . . and is still going strong.

It's time for the Salvation Army in the USA to jump on board!

WHAT ARE WE AIMING FOR?

1. To turn the tide

The dream behind 24/7 is to turn the tide of culture back to Jesus. Western culture is dangerously adrift.  Something has to change. But, clever strategy alone is not the answer. Never has been. History shows that the tide turns when God's people pray.  Salvationists are needed at the crest of this wave.

‘The tide is now flowing; we’re touching the wave,
We hear the loud call of the mighty to save.’

2. To mobilize prayer
  • 24/7 prayer is not for experts. It is for those who find prayer a struggle. 24/7 is a model that works!  People learn to pray ... by praying!
  • Capturing the imagination. For instance, young people today are more likely to turn up at a prayer meeting at 3 a.m. than at 7.30 pm! Why? Because it's extreme.
  • Nurturing in Salvationists a bold determination to pray like it all depends on us and work like it all depends on God, until the tide turns in our generation.
  • Joining USA Salvationists with a movement linked at www.24-7prayer.com in a virtual community, yet praying in real locations, with real passion.
"PRAYER ITSELF IS AN ART WHICH ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN TEACH US. PRAY FOR PRAYER. PRAY UNTIL YOU CAN REALLY PRAY!" C. H. Spurgeon

++ Please pray for this move of prayer among our brothers and sisters
in the Salvation Army of the Eastern USA! ++
