Phil Kumi
With Phil and Kumi
Welcome to Lectio for Families. In the Bible, we’re told that God created us to worship him, and so we’ve set aside this special week to explore how and why we worship.

Each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Father God, thank You that as we draw close to You, You promise to draw close to us. We need You today. Our hearts are ready. Help us to hear Your voice.

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

In today’s passage, Jesus speaks to his friends, the disciples, about the Holy Spirit.

Read by Kumi
John 16:13-14
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me.
John 16:13-14a (NIVUK)

Today’s Bible reading shows us that the Holy Spirit is really active. Listen to all those verbs, the doing words – the Holy Spirit comes to us, speaks, hears, tells, and glorifies Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives in us when we become Christians, helping us to worship and showing us just how amazing Jesus really is. That’s what it means to ‘glorify’ Jesus. So, when we find it hard to love Jesus, we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us to worship.

The Holy Spirit shows us how amazing Jesus is. Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: What’s the most amazing thing we’ve seen, or what’s the most amazing place we’ve been to this year so far?

ASK Prayers

And now let’s ASK God to help us and others.

Holy Spirit, we ASK you to fill our hearts with love for Jesus. Fill our minds with thoughts of Jesus. Help us to worship him.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Loving God, we ask Your Holy Spirit to fill our friends and our households. Be with those who are unwell, sad, or anxious today, and lead them closer to You.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

And Father God, we ask Your Holy Spirit to fill our world today. Pour out Your love over our schools and hospitals, over our neighbourhoods, and over our leaders. May Jesus be glorified in all these places.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

John 16:13-14
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me.
John 16:13-14a (NIVUK)

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and tell each other

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together.

Loving God, we choose to worship you today! We say YES to your Holy Spirit, we ask that you would help us to see how amazing Jesus is, and to worship Him throughout the day.

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
