With Chris and Vera Lynn
Welcome to Lectio for Families. This week we are continuing our series called Holy Spirit Adventures. We are reading and praying our way through the book of Acts, which is packed with stories about what the Holy Spirit did in and through Jesus’ followers.

Each day we will simply pray (P.R.A.Y.) together.
P: PAUSING to be still.
R: REJOICING with a Memory Verse and REFLECTING on some verses from the Bible.
A: ASKING God to help us and others.
Y: saying YES to God’s ways.

Pause

We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:

In and out.

In and out.

We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.

Pause

Prayer of Welcome

Holy Spirit, like the disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost, we’re patiently waiting for You to fill us with Your power and with Your presence. We’re ready for You to send us on new adventures.

Rejoice

Memory Verse

We REJOICE and celebrate God’s goodness with this week’s memory verse:

God, help us to remember Your Word.

Reflect

Bible Reading

Today, we’re REFLECTING on what Peter’s friends were doing when Peter turned up at their house, after the angel broke him out of prison.

Read by Vera Lynn
Acts 12:12,16-17
[Peter] went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark. Many people were gathered there, praying.
Peter continued to knock, and when they opened the door, they saw him and were amazed. Peter made a sign with his hand to tell them to be quiet. He explained how the Lord led him out of the jail, and he said, ‘Tell James and the other believers what happened.’ Then he left to go to another place.
Acts 12:12,16-17 (NCV)

On the day that Jesus was resurrected, the disciples were huddled together in a locked room when, suddenly, Jesus appeared amongst them. And then on the day of Pentecost, they’d been praying in an upper room when, suddenly, the Holy Spirit filled them all. And here they were again, in a locked room, praying for Peter who was locked up in a prison, when suddenly there was a knock at the door…!

There’s something important we can learn from these stories about the power of praying together with other Christians. Maybe whenever we feel like things are going wrong in our lives, or we feel afraid, then we should get together with our friends and pray. And who knows, when we do this, maybe incredible things will happen!

Let’s press pause and talk about today’s question, which is: What things are we praying about at the moment? Or, how have we heard God encourage us through our praying?

Ask

ASK Prayers

Let’s hold the things we’ve been thinking and talking about just now in our hearts. Maybe there’s a situation at home or at school or somewhere else where we need God to do something.

Holy Spirit, we ASK you for a miracle. We ASK you to do something that we can’t do in our own strength. Do something incredible, please.

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and pray

Now let’s pause for a moment and ASK the Holy Spirit to give us a word or a picture or maybe a Bible verse for that situation or that person.

Holy Spirit, we’re listening. We ASK you to speak to us – with words or pictures – so that our faith can grow a bit, and so that we know how to continue praying for a miracle.

Yes

Bible Reading

As we read the Bible again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

What word or phrase stood out from today’s Bible verses?

  • OPTIONAL: PAUSE the audio player now and tell each other

YES Prayer

And now, let’s say YES to God together.

Holy Spirit, we say YES to going on adventures with You. And we say YES to having more faith that you can do incredible things in and through our prayers.

Memory Verse

After enjoying this time with God and each other, let’s say our memory verse together:

Closing Prayer

Let’s put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You’ve made.

Let’s point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let’s point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
