The ruling elite in Turkmenistan will do anything to stay in power, so they suppress all groups they see as dangerous.
As a result, unregistered religious activity is illegal, and the church is under constant pressure. While the Russian Orthodox Church has learned to work within state restrictions, other denominations are seen as 'sects' that want to destroy the political system. Churches face raids, arrests and fines, and even the Orthodox Church is monitored.
Muslim-background believers have been locked up, beaten and expelled from their communities. Women who leave Islam risk being kidnapped and married off to a Muslim. This is because Islam is an important part of Turkmen culture, and Muslim-background believers face great pressure to return to Islam. Children of Christians face discrimination in schools and are excluded from benefits given to other students.
Open Doors provides immediate aid to Turkmen believers when they are jailed, excluded from families and communities, and deprived of livelihood and employment because of their faith in Christ. They also strengthen the persecuted church in Turkmenistan primarily through:
- Literature Distribution
- Prayer support
- Biblical Training
- Children/Youth Training
- Women Ministry
- Advocacy and Awareness Training
- Presence Ministry
- Vocational Training
- Social-Economic Development Projects
