In some parts of Ethiopia, political Islam is more prominent; and in these areas, Christians are often harassed, excluded from their communities and denied access to communal resources.
Muslim-background believers across Ethiopia are monitored and placed under huge pressure to deny their faith.
Christians who leave the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for non-traditional Protestant churches are often viewed as a threat and face opposition from the government and tribal leaders.
Sixty violent incidents were recorded against Christians in 2014, but many still may go unreported.
Open Doors has been active in Ethiopia since the late 1980s.
