The Road to Restoration
Gideon doesn’t know his exact age or how many years he was trapped on Lake Volta, forced to dive into dark waters to untangle fishing nets. Day after day he lived in fear- beaten, starved and hopeless.
IJM found Gideon and rescued him off of the lake. He stayed at an aftercare shelter where he began attending classes and receiving counselling.
His story reflects the real and lasting damage children are experiencing on the lake. When someone experiences trauma like Gideon’s the road to recovery is often long - those who spend their entire childhood enslaved spend many years working to regain what was lost.
But IJM is committed to the long-term journey.
We stayed in close contact with Gideon, and helped him enrol in vocational school to learn masonry as a means to support himself.
Despite the uphill battle, a couple of months ago, Gideon graduated and the IJM team were there to celebrate with him.
God, we praise you for Gideon and his journey of healing - we pray for the boys going through aftercare programmes; that they would find healing and hope for the future. We also pray for the boys still trapped on the lake; for IJM’s investigative teams and local police as they work to track down traffickers. Thank you for your sovereign power over these boys; bring them to safety, Lord.
