Defending the Orphan and Widow
Property grabbing is a devastating reality for thousands of widows and orphans in Uganda, forced off their land when a husband or father dies, leaving them homeless, destitute and vulnerable.
Claire had to flee her home with her five children after her brother-in-law attacked her with a machete and destroyed her house, crops and coffee plantation.
IJM fights for the rights of widows like Claire through mediation and the court, to reclaim the land that is rightfully theirs. But this takes time. In the interim, we provide urgent food, medicine and accommodation for families.
IJM were able to restore Claire and her children to their land and convict the perpetrator. At this point, we can rebuild what was destroyed, so families can support themselves and be safe in the long-term. Just as we rebuilt Claire’s home and set up her new business. Now her family are safe and Claire earns an income through growing crops and raising chickens.
We pray for those suffering because their land has been stolen - God, provide the help that they need, that their cases would be heard and that they would be restored back to their homes. We pray too, that widows and orphans will be protected from abuse in the future because of community initiatives and convicted perpetrators.
