‘I will give you every place where you set your foot…’
Joshua 1:3
Don’t just sit there, head to the nearest exit and talk with God about the people and places you pass.
Here are five simple suggestions to get you started:
As you start your walk ask God to go with you. You can decide ahead of time where you’re going to walk, or you can simply ask the Holy Spirit to lead you as you go. Just make sure you don’t get lost!
Pay attention to the people you pass, as well as the landscape and atmosphere of the places you walk through. Pause and pray outside hospitals, schools, local government buildings and other places of influence. Ask God to draw your attention to things He wants you to pray for.
Focus on God’s love for the people and the place. Pray blessing, even (especially!) in areas that are considered ‘dark’ or ‘difficult’. Use The Lord’s Prayer: “Your Kingdom come, your will be done…” (Matt. 6:10)
Ask God to show you where He is already at work in a place. Listen for Bible verses and promises to pray over the area.
Record what you notice, what you pray for and any verses, pictures, or words you believe God spoke to you. When you pray for the area again, read these notes before you begin.
Jesus sent his disciples out in twos. It’s not intimidating or as conspicuous as a large group, and it is safer than people going on their own. A larger group breaking into pairs can also help to cover more ground.
Agree a place and time to start together. Explain why you’re gathering to pray and share a few pointers for those who haven’t prayer walked before. If you’re going to split into smaller groups, then agree a place and time to end together.
Inform your prayers. Investigate the history of the place – how has the past shaped the present? Notice the landmarks you pass and learn more about the people who live there now.
Meet up at the end and take time to share what you’ve seen, prayed about and heard from God. Keep a record and plan to pray again!
