How do we pray for an international crisis?Brian Heasley - 7 Sep 2015
If you'd like to sign up for a slot in our week of prayer, the details can be found here
As we begin our global week of prayer for the European refugee crisis, many of us have signed up in hour slots to pray over the next 7 days.
But how are we supposed to pray for a situation so desperate?
Well, a great starting point is to remember that, though the crisis can seem so overwhelming, God is never overwhelmed.
In Isaiah 66: 1 -2, says this:
“Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord.”
So, as we begin our hour, let us lift praise to the Lord and remember His greatness.
PRAYING FOR THE CRISIS
We don’t know the answer but we know we have to pray...
THE RIGHTEOUS CRY, AND THE LORD HEARS AND DELIVERS THEM OUT OF ALL THEIR TROUBLES
1. Pray for The Refugees
We need to pray for those that are fleeing. The journey is desperate and dangerous, the risks are great and undertaken only through fear. So lets start to believe that our prayers can stop boats sinking. Remember their humanity; they are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, they have hopes and dreams like you and I.
(This UNHCR article may help you understand the journey that many refugees are undertaking)
THE FOREIGNER RESIDING AMONG YOU MUST BE TREATED AS YOUR NATIVE-BORN. LOVE THEM AS YOURSELF
2. Pray that the world would respond with Love
Pray that our primary reaction to refugees would always be love, not fear; that we would always love the one in front of us, regardless of background or status.
FOR THE KINGDOM IS THE LORD'S AND HE RULES
OVER THE NATIONS
3. Pray for the root causes of this disaster
Pray that problems are solved in countries of origin – there will have to be some major changes in the countries of Syria, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Eritrea, Afghanistan and others. Lets get informed about these areas and pray for Gods kingdom to come, for peace to reign and stability to be restored.
HE HAS SHOWN YOU, O MORTAL, WHAT IS GOOD. AND WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU? TO ACT JUSTLY AND TO LOVE MERCY AND TO WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD
4. Pray for all who are involved in bringing aid
Pray for hard pressed agencies and churches working at the border on both land and sea as they seek to deal with this influx of people. Bless them, protect them, give them the energy and resources to respond well to all they come across.
(Our friends at Open Doors have a great appeal happening at the moment)
I URGE, THEN, FIRST OF ALL, THAT PETITIONS, PRAYERS, INTERCESSION AND THANKSGIVING BE MADE FOR ALL PEOPLE— FOR KINGS AND ALL THOSE IN AUTHORITY, THAT WE MAY LIVE PEACEFUL AND QUIET LIVES IN
ALL GODLINESS AND HOLINESS
1 TIMOTHY 2:1
5. Pray for all the governments involved
Pray for those in authority, those who make policy, that they have wisdom and compassion to handle this complex and difficult situation with grace and mercy. The UN said recently we must tackle the root causes of the refugee crisis. We need our leaders to address the root causes of forced migration.
HOW LONG WILL YOU DEFEND THE UNJUST AND SHOW PARTIALITY TO THE WICKED? DEFEND THE WEAK AND THE FATHERLESS; UPHOLD THE CAUSE OF THE POOR AND THE OPPRESSED. RESCUE THE WEAK AND THE NEEDY; DELIVER THEM FROM THE HAND OF THE WICKED
6. Pray that those profiting illegally from this crisis would be brought to justice
We need to pray about criminal people traffickers that this evil trade that preys on the weak and vulnerable would desist.
This, then, is how you should pray...
7. Finish by praying the Lords prayer.
Once more we hand it back to the Lord, he is sovereign, he listens and we, his people, must continually lift this crisis up to Him.
