Maya Soluade's "Heroine of the Faith?" - contest winner one

Published: February 28th, 2006

During the next two weeks we will feature the three winners from the 24-7 writer's challenge. Thanks again to everyone who submitted their brilliant work in this contest. The first featured winner is Maya Soluade from London...her poem, 'Heroine of the Faith?' was a delightful human mixture of weakness and strength - flesh and spirit - resolve and honesty. We hope you enjoy it the way we did.

Heroine of the Faith?
by Maya Soluade

My Gucci pumps are my favourite shoes
They go well with jeans or whatever I choose
But somehow deficient, worth less than a dime
'Cos this lady here has a mountain to climb

I dont enjoy camping, I hate to read books
I prefer sipping coffee, discussing my looks
But looks cant help me now, nor phoning a friend
To get to my stop, I've a hill to ascend

Me - fit for this army? Am I truly a soldier?
Surely I should be much leaner, much bolder?
I'll attack and defend, for success in this drama
But not in my power, I'll use spiritual armour

Oh! How I need you, need strength for the fight
I need to be bathed in that heavenly light
That caused men to rise up and face death head on
I want to be transformed, more of you, of me none.

What I need is Jesus, a spiritual answer
For a terminal case of a vile, soulish cancer
But there are no short cuts or safe cable cars
I must dig in and boot up and aim for the stars.

Thanks again Maya for your work, and we hope you enjoy the CD!
You can email Maya here with comments, questions...
