Just 24-7's Directory gives you the chance to find out more about social justice projects taking place within the movement and about things you can get involved with or learn from. This list isn't exhaustive - there are many projects going on which aren't listed here - but the following projects give a flavour and a chance to connect with what God's doing globally.
Wild Hope International was founded in 2004 by a group of friends desiring to respond to the staggering needs in Africa. Having logged many years (and miles) on the continent, our staff members bring to this venture the experience of lessons learned through many years of full-time work in East Africa.
Africa’s shocking statistics are not neutral numbers to us. When we think of Africa we think of people that mean a great deal to us. These mothers, father, sisters and brothers are our friends. We long to see them living healthy, productive and spiritually full lives. Foundational to all, we are profoundly motivated by the Biblical mandate to care for the poor, make disciples and set the captives free. We believe that the Good News of Jesus is good news in the here and now, as well as in eternity. We are a small operation, mobile and flexible in our efforts. Like the micro-enterprises we assist, we ourselves are a growing and dynamic endeavor. We are passionate about the expression of Christ through community. We believe that in journeying together we are empowered to be agents of transformation in this world.
24-7 has got to know Wild Hope through our friends Byron and Lisa Borden. We first came across Byron and Lisa in Portugal, running 24-7 prayer rooms as a part of some incredible mission amongst young people - we were amazed to see the stories of changed lives through the way God was using them.
But as we got to know them, we found their passion was Africa and their move back, to the beautiful country of Tanzania, wasn't a surprise.
Byron and Lisa and Wild Hope give us a window into development issues, the practical needs of Africa, how to build community, micro-finance, small business and the environment.
12 members of the Boiler Room community studied Shane Claiborne's Irresistible Revolution asking the question: "What does justice and mercy look like at the Boiler Room?"
This led us to another justice question "Why shouldn't the Westside have _______?" We begun to take action, holding a Fourth of July parade, creating an art gallery or running a basketball camp for the Westside.
These types of things are normal for other communities. It seems just to have them in an area of great need like the Stockbridge neighbourhood as well.
We learned about the Father's desire for justice as God answered our prayer for transitional housing for friends out of rehabilitation/incarceration looking to get work. A supporter of the Boiler Room has started a house called Stepping Stone. 5 friends of the Boiler Room who were previously on the street, are now living at Stepping Stone getting on their feet. One is now employed full-time by another supporter of the Boiler Room. Three more have gotten employment as well. To be transparent about all of our friends we have ministered to, we also have five other friends on the street and bound by their addictions as well as one more in prison.
While gathering with our intercessory team in September, one member said he had the impression that ministering to kids again was in our future. The interns had all gotten strong impressions for providing a place of refuge for kids in the neighborhood. Three of the interns are now meeting with kids weekly with an eye toward discipleship. 10 kids are participating in these times of refuge.
One Boiler Room friend was praying during 24-7 this summer and we praise the Holy Spirit for speaking to her and helping us learn.
I found myself thinking of prostitutes, and wondering why someone couldn't pay them to sit and listen to the Gospel or to pray with them, or for them. I know that sounds strange, but again, I really feel this is God. I have learned that many of these girls are stuck and can't get out or don't know what else to do, or maybe they have been doing it so long that they figure they may as well stick it out, or maybe that they deserve this. I am sure that you have already thought of those reasons, but some of this is new to me. So when I was at the Boiler Room Friday I prayed a lot about if these two things are something that I am supposed to keep pursuing. Of course God came. When I was getting ready to leave I was looking at the map that you have in the prayer room and the first tab that I read says "Break the strongholds of addiction and prostitution." The two things that I have been praying about were staring back at me, I left knowing that I am to do something. I am still praying about what that looks like, but seeing that on the map, I knew I had to e-mail you and at least share this.
After this prayer, a staff member from Women at Risk was visiting the Boiler Room in October. In the process of conversation, we asked her to come teach us more about human trafficking and the sex trade, both on the Westside and internationally. 33 people came for this time of teaching and are now starting to formulate plans for ongoing intercession as well as awareness and advocacy work.
In this beginning of 2010, we are focused on this six months of unbroken prayer called Near. One thing that has mobilized in this run up to Near is groups of people who are mobilized in intercession for five particular justice areas.
We are going to be faithful in weekly gatherings during this period of 24-7. We expect that the Lord will build capacity, shape mission and bring opportunities for His people. Our action plan is to pray and listen.
In October 24-7 Prayer invited friends around the world to participate in a week of focused prayer to end human trafficking last month. We found that God met with us as we prayed and things began to happen.
In Athens, Georgia (US) a local massage parlor closed down unexpectedly and a man was indicted and pled guilty to trafficking young girls from Mexico to Atlanta for the purpose of prostitution. That week also saw 52 children rescued in a US wide police operation.
In Reading (UK), our prayer week coincided with front page headlines about trafficking and with the area of a Reading man for involvement in trafficking.
Since then we've held other focused prayer weeks and intend to hold more shortly.
Human Trafficking is a complex issue, with many causes and many outworkings. Not even global experts entirely understand how the trade works. But we know someone who does. Our God of light is able to expose, to bring change and to work miracles. Will you join us in prayer. Will you perservere (Luke 18) or even fast and pray (Acts 14:23) for us to see God end this horrible trade?
If you want to know more about praying about trafficking, read 'How to pray for Justice'
If you joined in any of these prayer weeks and God did something, why not contact us at justice@24-7prayer.com and let us know.
In the mafia-run walled city of Boys Town, Kelly and a small community was praying with women and men caught up in cycles of prostitution, poverty and drugs. Prayer is a dangerous, dirty business, but by modeling Christ's love, mercy and justice lives were changed.
Over our ten+ year journey together there have been many times and many places when God has focused our attention on HIV/AIDS and asked us to pray. In November, leading up to World AIDS Day on 1st December, we’d like to ask you to pray each day for the affects of this virus and for change.
During November we will be blogging regular reminders and calls to prayer.
To catch up you can read:
In March 2011 the world was rocked with news of a tsunami hitting the coast of Japan. Thousands died and 10's of thousands lost their homes in just a few short hours. A few days later news broke that a nuclear power facility was close to melt down. There was no doubt that this powerful, fiercely proud nation was experiencing one of the worst disasters in living memory.
Shortly afterwards leaders from 24-7 Prayer were gathered in England to pray and during heartfelt intercession for Japan the Holy Spirit spoke to us about turning our prayers to practical action. It was an exciting moment that felt a bit like Acts 13:3
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Remembering this we laid hands on Jon Petersen, commissioning him to return to his beloved homeland on the next possible flight and since then the Lord has confirmed His word to us in a supernatural chain of events which underlines his absolute love for the Japanese people as they suffer the ongoing apocalyptic affects of a massive earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown.
Since that time teams from 24-7 Prayer headed by Jon Petersen have been working with the relief agency CRASH bringing together prayer and practical help.
Jon has been filing regular reports on the 24-7 blog, to read more visit the Just 24-7 Stories page.
Living Generously is several things. Firstly its a message, its about making a difference in the world in which we live by using our time, money and energy to help others. One way they have decided to support this message is to set up this web site to challenge, inspire and empower people to live generously.
In practical terms, the web site also provides a single access point enabling you to find gifts for good causes, meeting different needs across the world and then either give a specific gift or invite friends and family to give to those you have selected by setting up a gift list, e.g. for christmas, birthday or a wedding. Its not just about giving of our money or about buying gifts for good causes, its about our lifestyle and looking beyond ourselves. It may not involve money at all, it may be giving some of our time to help with a local youth project or doing kind things for those around us.
Living Generously is an innovative and exciting example of how through making small changes in our lives we can make a big difference to those who need it the most. I warmly commend it to you. Mike Pilavachi, Soul Survivor
