Just 24-7

"For I call you...

...to find the Sons of Thunder. I call you to find those who will marry social justice with prayer......I am going to open a unique arm of this ministry that is a different place than you’ve known; it’s going to be a mantle of social justice. That which William Booth had, I give it to you this night."(Cindy Jacobs to Pete Greig, Phoenix Arizona 20th June 2008)

These words, shared at our ‘Home’ gathering in Southampton in 2008, didn’t surprise us. The concept of marrying prayer and social justice isn't new for 24-7 - Justice and Mercy always been part of our movement, in our prayers in prayer room, and into practical action in our communities.

What did come to mind though was the question of being intentional, and being trans-local in what we were doing. About 7 years ago 24-7’s International team debated whether we should have a specific ‘Justice’ department, and concluded not to ... that justice should remain a value which flows through all our work.

But Cindy’s word came alongside growing convictions from others that maybe it was time to be more specific - to build on Pete Worthington’s work with Living Generously - and to develop what we were doing in local communities.

From these prophetic words and seedling ideas has come Just 24-7. An idea, a move, an attempt for us to build on our calling and desire to serve the poor and see transformation coming in our world.
