In our top-floor prayer room the combination of these words, and the view across the city, were really powerful....

'Arise, cry out in the night,
as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart like water
in the presence of the Lord.
Lift up your hands to Him
for the lives of your children,
Who faint from hunger
at the head of every street.'

Lamentations 2:19, The Bible

I knew that out there on the streets as I prayed there were hungry souls, desperate for God, and yet not knowing that He was the thing missing from their lives.

I thought of the addicts we work with through our church projects, the kids our youth workers come into contact with, many from broken homes, most into petty crime, the ladies of the night, most of them in their teens, who while I was sat in the comfort and warm would be out on the street corners of the red light area plying their trade, and I wept and prayed.
