"The story of our summer in Ibiza this year is one that could cover many pages.", writes 24-7 Ibiza team member Brian Heasley. "As a resident team we are just 4 adults and 2 children, but the 24-7 Ibiza story involves many other people."
Brian continues: "There were the 58 volunteers who joined us on 2 week teams, the 7 who came and worked with us for a few months, the friends who regularly support us and cheer us on and the many people – here in Ibiza and other places - who pray, pray, pray!
And most importantly, God, who hears and responds to all those prayers.
Paul writes to the church in Rome, "So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering." (The Message).
That’s what we’re trying to do. For us it meant many hours of prayer – in our west end centre but also around the streets of the west end, all over San Antonio and at some of the beautiful and spiritually significant places on the island.
It also involved many miles walked, drunks helped, vulnerable people protected, lonely people listened to, workers befriended, prayer requests taken, bibles handed out, conversations had, hands held in prayer, food bought, meals shared, gifts given, tears wiped, hands with urine on, clothes with puke on, smiles dished out, worship given, prayers walked.
And we danced – danced figuratively to the rhythm set by Jesus whose life we try to express and way we try to live in, and literally as we celebrated music and worshipped at some of the island’s best known clubs.
We’re looking forward to the winter season with it's less intense schedule but have mixed feelings as we are sad to say goodbye to many amazing people that we've come to know over the last months.
We received some beautiful thank you messages from some of the people we were able to help and spend time with this summer – here are snippets from a few.
‘...You befriended me when all my friends had left. You fed me when I had no money to buy food'
‘...Just to say that all is well and thank you for saving me that awful morning, my faith in good people and the lord watching over me has not faded in the slightest and i would just like to take this moment to say Thank you to you all from the bottom of my heart'
‘...We think the job you do out here is amazing. Not just with helping the messy holiday makers, but with looking out for us workers too. When we first got to Ibiza, we were told about your work and got chatting to you, and over time you guys have become some of our closest friends, which is something we appreciate greatly. You have been there for us through all the ups and downs and have been a great support through everything.’
‘...members of 24-7 Ibiza helped to get us back to our hotel with their transport - to be honest if they had not came along I dread to think how we would have got back to our hotel safely. I can only say that four angels on earth were there to offer their help and would take no payment or reward'
‘...I had a phone call tonight from one of your group to say that she had picked up my very drunk son from the street and taken him to the health centre. She stayed in touch with me and stayed with my son until he was ok enough for her to take him back to his hotel and friends. I can't thank you enough for the work that you're doing. I was so worried about him getting drunk and insensible in Ibiza but of course you have to let your children take risks when they get to their late teens. You always hope that if you're not there to help them if they get in trouble, then someone else will be there to lend a hand. I can't thank you enough for all your help. I've always said to my son that he has an angel on his shoulder. Tonight that angel was xx’.
We are so grateful for the privilege to be part of what God is doing here.
Please pray for all the people that we have met over the summer months – that they will remember the conversations and prayers with them.
