Last week, as I watched the news on the terrorist attack in Burgos, I couldn’t believe my eyes: I was seeing on TV a police building that I often drive by. The scenery was familiar but the consequences of the bomb made the place look like one of desolation and terror. To think what could have happened had the bomb been placed differently gives me chills. The news insists on saying that the disaster could have been much worse if the bombs had affected the foundations of the building.
I started to wonder whether the fact that no one died was due to the error made by the terrorists, because of inexperience (as reported on the news) or something else... Suddenly, hundreds of memories came to my mind of the many times we had prayed for the city of Burgos, and not just us. Burgos has attracted a lot of intercession teams from all over the world and they’ve come just to pray and sight-see (although Burgos has one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in the world) they've come to draw God's attention to our city.
I am certain that God protected all of the innocent people that were sleeping in the building on that “quiet” night in July. I know that every single prayer walk over the city, every prayer meeting, every 24-7 Prayer Room that we have had over the years, have asked God to take a hand in circumstances like the one we’ve just lived through.
We know a couple from church that lived in the building that suffered the attack. They told us that 15 minutes before the explosion, their little baby girl started to cry like she’s never done before. Her mother took her into their bedroom and was grateful when they realised that the baby’s was the most affected room in the blast. This is a big miracle and we are so grateful the whole family is safe.
For many years I was part of these “insignificant” and naive acts of prayer, sometimes I used to wondered if it was normal to stay until 4am praying and interceding for our city. Sunday after Sunday I used to get up early to meet with some other crazy guys to pray and cry out for every neighbor of Burgos, for the churches and authorities. I realize that God loves those naive and irrational prayers… He loves when we go to a mountain at 7am to pray and people look at us like if we were crazy ones talking to thin air... Maybe some of those prayers have been answered.
Now more than ever, I know that prayer has its consequences and that we involve ourselves in serious, deep and powerful matters, that can ruin the strength and skill of a bunch of terrorists aiming to kill and destroy.
We shouldn’t underestimate what God is capable of doing, we shouldn’t get discouraged when we don’t see instant results to our prayers. Our role is to trust our Father and call His attention to the evil of this world with our naïve and irrational pleas that provoke a smile in God’s face.
