Body-Popping Prayer
Andrea Percy  28th Jul 09

"It is priveledge to hear stories of how God has met with people all across the United Kingdom in 24-7 Prayer Rooms," writes Andrea Percy from 24-7UK.  "They're often touching, inspiring and sometimes absurd!  I thought I'd share with you just one of the many stories from the last month that have warmed my heart and brought a smile to my face..."

"I saw two men in their 40s-50s, who have never met before and don’t even speak the same language, start to dance. I’m not talking dad style stationary dancing, I'm talking total abandonment - limbs everywhere, swinging each other around the room and at one point even doing this rolling move on the floor!  It certainly doesn’t look smooth but there is passion as they dance before an audience of one.

Within moments the dynamic in the prayer room changes; at the risk of sounding weird, it’s like the Holy Spirit released freedom in the room.  A sense of total liberation and abandonment fill the hut.  People start joining in around me. All round the room people are doing different styles of dancing; body popping to the left, funky upper body movements to my right, and we don’t have a word to describe the genre of dancing that is going on in front of me! It looks more like a freestyle dance workshop than a worship meeting. I’m not a dancer - let me qualify that: I can churn out the fail safe moves that have seen me nicely through University; but in a church context you're lucky if you get an on the spot jiggle. Tonight is different; I just can’t stop my self dancing!

I’m left thinking that maybe we experienced something similar to David as he danced before God. We are told that David danced and leaped before the Lord; he was prepared to lay down his dignity in abandonment and adoration of God (2 Samuel 6). Maybe there is dancing in heaven after all. If that is the case then I echo the words of that well known song –‘lets get the party started’!" (Anon, London)
