India: Urgent Prayer Request for Slum Community

Published: May 3rd, 2006

24-7 Mission partner Asha is requesting urgent prayer for one of the slums where they work.

We pleaded with the police and tried our utmost to
stop the
sudden
demo-
lition
activity
but our
plea fell
on deaf
ears.

There was wailing & crying every-where with bewildered mothers trying to locate their children.
Homes here are being demolished as part of a government drive to modernise Delhi. The government plans to rehouse people in flats. Asha have been desperately advocating on behalf of the people who currently live in the slums.

Writing about the first day of demolitions, an Asha worker says, ‘we pleaded with the police and tried our utmost best to stop the sudden demolition activity struggling to buy some time, but our plea fell on deaf ears. There was wailing and crying everywhere with bewildered mothers trying to locate their children. The bulldozing activity continued, reducing huts to rubble, relentlessly till 5:45 pm.’

We need your prayers that: Dr. Kiran (leader of Asha) is able to be successful in halting this demolition on Friday morning as she makes every effort for this.
In this heat of 41 degrees, residents of Thokar No. 8 are living without water and electricity, as their supply was cut off during the demolition. There are no toilets and no cleaners have been to the slum since the day of demolition. The only people who are standing by their side are Dr. Kiran and her team from Asha.

‘We still have a long way to go to get what the residents rightfully deserve, but we praise God for his power and mercy.

‘Please pray urgently the transit camps are made available quickly and that the residents can peacefully be removed to these camps. Also please pray that the government acts fast to
provide houses as the residents are currently living in extremely appalling conditions.’
