URGENT- Pray for Persecuted Christians in Belarus

Published: March 25th, 2006

For many of us, the present crisis in Belarus represents little more than another drama on our televisions of an evening. Perhaps we pray a bit about it, hoping that things will turn out well for a country living under an oppressive totalitarian regime. Meanwhile, Belarusian followers of Jesus are at the forefront of a movement for democracy in the nation. As I write, these disciples are enduring persecution, and they need our prayers and support.

This week Christians came together from across the nation to imagine what their nation would look like if it were following in the way of Jesus. They were joined by Darrow Miller, YWAM missionary and author of "Discipling Nations". Many of those in attendance had already been involved, one way or another, in opposing the current autocratic state - hoping, praying and campaigning for democracy and freedom in this nation.

After an incredible two dreamy days, on Friday morning, whilst security forces blitzed demonstrators gathered in October Square, Minsk; police in riot gear burst into the conference in Belarus. Over 150 believers were held against their will until midday, without charge. At no time was any explanation offered for the police's actions. At 2PM Friday afternoon, the majority of attendees were released, save for two pastors. Boris and Dima were cordoned off from the group and removed to a separate location for 'further questioning' - not for the first time. Currently, no-one can say with certainty where they are or what the outcome will be.

"I will always remember this day until the day I die." These words were spoken to me over the phone this morning by a friend working currently as a clandestine missionary in Belarus. At the risk of threatening his work in Belarus, I cannot disclose his name, nor the names of the organisations he is working with - but he has asked me to try to mobilise prayer through 24-7 for the Christians of Belarus in this hour. Many of the organisers and attendees number among his friends, and he might well have been with Boris and Dima wherever they are this evening if he had been in Belarus this morning. Most if this information reached him via SMS as we spoke on the phone.

Please take some time now to pray for Boris and Dima.
Also pray for the many churches and Christian organizations working to reach the lost with the Gospel. These organizations are dedicated to helping people get a better future, and to improving the standard of living for everyone.  At the moment, many of them are in danger of being closed down by the government even though they are completely legal.  Pray for justice to prevail.
